The Outbreak Defence™ Programme

Overview

Infectious disease outbreaks can happen anywhere people congregate. Depending on the disease, a local outbreak can quickly develop into a regional epidemic, or even a global pandemic.

  • 2020 COVID-19 Pandemic (Global)
  • 2018/19 Measles Outbreak (Brooklyn, NYC)
  • 2014/15 MERS-CoV Epidemic (Middle East)
  • 2014 Norovirus Outbreak (Explorer of the Sea)

The Outbreak Defence™ programme includes four key components:

  • Specialized Education & Training for Registered Nurses
  • Awareness Education for Organizations
  • Hygiene Review & Advisory Services
  • Outbreak Defence™ Certification of Built Environments & Vessels

Key to the success of Outbreak Defence™  is having a network of specially educated registered nurses (RNs) who administer and apply the Outbreak Defence™ certification programme. The quality, objectivity, and value of Outbreak Design™ certification is achieved by having independent RNs review the hygiene policies and practices of organizations seeking certification, along with confirming that the requirements of the methodology have been fully met.

While most organizations follow government guidelines, recommendations, and regulations, it is important to notes these typically provide a minimum level of hygiene and public health, which compliance often not being regularly verified. The Outbreak Defence™ programme goes well beyond minimum government standards by requiring RNs to conduct annual site-specific assessments using an evidence-based and scientifically-informed methodology that draws in part on the aggregated best practices from global organizations such as the:

  • World Health Organization (WHO)
  • Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC)
  • National Health Service (UK)
  • Health Canada
  • Australian Department of Health
  • New Zealand Ministry of Health

Outbreak Defence™ goes well beyond minimum government standards by having specially trained and educated RNs objectively apply a  evidence-based and scientifically-informed methodology.

  • reasonable, prudent, and evidence-based steps have been taken to mitigate the risk of an infectious disease spreading within the building or vessel

  • management, staff, and other personnel have the knowledge and equipment needed to aptly minimize the spread, reduce the impact, and quickly recover.

  • meaningful efforts have been taken to ensure appropriate sanitation tools and materials, personal protection equipment, and other hygiene related items are available for prolonged use.
